Summer’s latest family film offering is Ballerina – an animated feature set in 1879 France. Ballerina follows the story of young orphan Félicie (voiced by Elle Fanning) as she runs away from her orphanage with her best friend Victor (Dane DeHaan) to follow her dream of becoming a ballerina in Paris. Upon arriving in Paris Félicie and Victor face many obstacles but the two never lose sight of their dreams.
Produced on a budget of only $30m from new animation company L’Atelier, Ballerina is a step down from big-budget blockbusters coming out of Pixar and DreamWorks but nonetheless still visually gorgeous and thoroughly enjoyable to watch.
Featuring vocals from popular stars Elle Fanning (Maleficent), Maddie Ziegler (Dance Moms) and popstar Carly Rae Jepsen the voices are well suited to their characters and the soundtrack is upbeat and modern whilst the score does an excellent job of setting the mood.
Ballerina is a heart-warming story that can be enjoyed by people of all ages but is especially perfect for young children owing to the simplicity of the plot. The storyline is easy to follow, entertaining and funny with moments that will touch the audience as well. The main character’s determination and drive throughout serves as a valuable message to young children to never give up.
Parents looking for a movie to see with their kids these summer holidays look no further as Ballerina has moments that will make you laugh, have you on the edge of your seats and get your kids dancing in their seats.
