RAFFLES FASHION STUDENTS AND THE DESIGN RESIDENCY – TOGETHER AGAIN FOR MBFWA 2017
SYDNEY, 19th APRIL, 2017: Raffles College of Design and Commerce has joined forces with The Design Residency for the second consecutive year for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia (MBFWA).
On Thursday 18th May, 2017, seven Raffles College Fashion Design alumni students will unveil their collections for MBFWA 2017, at the Raffles International Showcase (Carriageworks, 11am, 245 Wilson St, Eveleigh).
Raffles students will be able to preview their designs to the media before, during and after Fashion Week as well as receive business mentoring in a dynamic environment.
“We worked with The Design Residency in 2016 and it was such a success. Our designers benefitted in a multitude of ways, not least the mentoring that they received. Working with such a forward-thinking partner allows Raffles College to nurture and support its alumni, as well as its current students,” said Nick Comino, Program Manager for Fashion Design at Raffles College of Design and Commerce.
Three alumni from MBFWA 2016 have gone on to achieve great international success – Iva Pfeiffer has shown at New York Fashion Week and two more shows are scheduled for the US in 2017; Leah Williams is building a strong Asian presence after showing at Beijing and Shanghai; and Chad Nguyen has partnered with Harper’s Bazaar in his native Vietnam.
The Design Residency was founded and spearheaded by fashion industry icon Lorraine Lock, and its role is to nurture, mentor, protect and grow emerging Australian designers in the fields of fashion, jewellery, lighting, product and textile design.
“We are delighted to be working again with Raffles College of Design and Commerce. The Residency was created to help young designers; both in terms of developing their brands and with making sure that their ideas are protected. We teach them how to enter and navigate within the world of sales, marketing and PR and grow their contact base,” said Lorraine Lock. “This is such a crucial time for emerging designers and we look forward to having some input into their success on what is a tough world stage.”
The students will showcase their collections at The Design Residency throughout the week commencing 15th May 2017. During this period the showroom will be open to media, industry andgeneral public alike.
Since joining the official MBFWA program in 2011, the Raffles International Showcase has been widely recognised by the industry as one of the most important and entertaining events on the Sydney emerging fashion calendar. Each of the Raffles College designers will showcase a 10-piece ready-to-wear Resort collection for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week 2016. Collections include innovative women’s wear, contemporary menswear, couture design, and tailoring.
