Adelaide to come alive with immersive spectacular!
Adelaide will be the first Australian city in 2021 to experience the world’s most popular multi-sensory experience, Van Gogh Alive, when the immersive spectacular dazzles the city from July 1, before touring to Brisbane, Canberra, Perth and Newcastle.
The highlight event of new winter festival Illuminate Adelaide, Van Gogh Alive will transform the former Le Cornu site on O’Connell St with a spectacular purpose-built digital gallery, The Grand Pavilion, which will be exclusively unveiled in Adelaide alongside other features that will premiere in South Australia.
Taking six weeks to construct, the 20,000 square foot gallery will house the immersive experience and give visitors the sensation of walking right into Van Gogh’s most famous paintings.
Created by Bruce Peterson’s Grande Experiences, Van Gogh Alive has entertained more than 8 million visitors in 70+ cities (including Sydney in 2020) across six continents.
Presented by Lexus and produced by Andrew Kay AM in association with BBC and Fane, in a world-first for Adelaide, Van Gogh’s masterpieces will come alive in the purpose-built Grand Pavilion, which was constructed in Germany under the supervision of Adelaide-based company spanIT.
Says Andrew Kay: “We can’t wait to unveil the extraordinarily beautiful Grand Pavilion which we have designed specifically to showcase Van Gogh Alive.

“The Grand Pavilion is not only home to the Sensory 4TM Gallery which houses Van Gogh Alive but it features four additional immersive spaces including the instagrammable Van Gogh’s bedroom, Van Gogh’s Café at Arles at Night where you can sit and enjoy a glass of Taittinger champagne, the amazing infinity Sunflower Room where you can stand in a never ending field of sunflowers, and, in a world first, the spectacular Starry Night Room which allows visitors to walk on air through Van Gogh’s famous painting ‘Starry Night’.
“Trust us, Adelaide hasn’t seen anything like ‘Van Gogh Alive at The Grand Pavilion’; this is undoubtedly the world’s most popular multi-sensory and mind-blowing art experience and we are thrilled that Adelaide will be the first leg of its two-year multi-city tour.”
Featuring more than 3000 images set to a classical score, Van Gogh Alive will allow visitors to immerse themselves in world-famous post-impressionist works by the Dutch master.
Says Bruce Peterson, Van Gogh Alive’s owner and creator: “Van Gogh Alive is an exceptionally innovative multi-sensory experience that took 18 months and countless iterations over the past decade to create.
“It was the very first of its kind in the world. Van Gogh Alive has really redefined the way many people around the world engage with art and culture and it has brought tremendous pleasure to audiences old and young, experienced and inexperienced in art and culture.”
Visitors to The Grand Pavilion are surrounded by a vibrant symphony of light, colour, sound and fragrance as Van Gogh’s greatest paintings come to life. The experience provides a COVID-safe environment that is designed to be contactless and complies with social-distancing advice for this family-friendly experience.
Powered by Sensory4TM immersive technology, Van Gogh Alive transports visitors inside an exact recreation of Café Terrace at Night as well as two majestic immersive areas: the Sunflower Infinity Room and the walk-through immersive recreation of Starry Night.
Other captivating features include: a visually stunning wraparound floral exterior, the Taittinger Champagne Bar, the Asahi Bar, and the Van Gogh Alive Merchandise Shop (with 75 amazing Van Gogh items for sale).
More than 160 South Australians will be employed to bring this spectacle to life in Adelaide, with 64 locals hired to create the venue while 100 South Australians will be employed for the season that starts on July 1.
Says Anna Cordingley, Designer of the Grand Pavilion Foyers and Immersive Spaces: “The vibrancy of Van Gogh, his fabulous collision of order and chaos and his mastery of colour makes designing immersive environments in his wake a thrilling task!
“Our Grand Pavilion is a celebration of his renowned Sunflowers, his Starry Night, his Café Terrace at Night, his Bedroom in Arles and many more. It is an environment designed to delight the senses and entice even the harshest critic to settle back and enjoy!”
