ADELAIDE FILM FESTIVAL HITS BOX OFFICE RECORD WITH 7 STELLAR DAYS OF FILMS AND EVENTS STILL TO COME PLUS DUE TO POPULAR DEMAND! NEW FILM ADDED TO PROGRAM & ENCORE SCREENINGS ANNOUNCED |
After three huge first days, including a sold-out Opening Night film and after party with a performance by The Angels, and a red carpet and Q&A appearance by acting royalty Cate Blanchett at a special presentation of her new film TÁR, the Adelaide Film Festival (AFF) is thrilled to report it has hit a box office record, with a week of the Festival still to come. Due to popular demand, AFF is also excited to announce a new special presentation screening added to the schedule and a slew of encore screenings. NEW FILM – VENICE FILM FESTIVAL WINNER BONES AND ALL BONES AND ALL – Directed by Luca Guadagnino. With Timothée Chalamet, David Gordon Green, Taylor Russell, Mark Rylance. One of the most anticipated and controversial films of the year, winner of the Silver Lion award for Best Direction at the 2022 Venice International Film Festival, just announced for Adelaide Film Festival. Screening Saturday October 29 at 9pm at Palace Nova Eastend Cinema. ENCORE SCREENINGS OF FESTIVAL FAVOURITES – FROM MONDAY NOVEMBER 1 MONDAY NOVEMBER 1 6pm: (tbc) 7.45pm: AFF Closing Night film talk TALK TO ME returns with Q&A with writer/directors, Adelaide’s own Daniel and Michael Philippou (A.K.A RackaRacka). After racking up over a billion views on their RackaRacka Youtube channel, the Philippou brothers, Danny and Michael, finally make it to the big screen with this story of a troubled teenager, Mia, and her group of friends who discover how to conjure spirits using a ceramic embalmed hand. They become hooked on the new thrill, until Mia is confronted by a soul claiming to be her dead mother. She opens the door to the spirit world and becomes plagued by supernatural visions. Having prompted a devastating possession, the group must struggle to decide who to trust: the dead or the living. The Philippou brothers take their action skills to a new, cinematic level in this thrilling psychological horror that will keep audiences on the edge of their seats. TUESDAY NOVEMBER 2 6pm: Monolith The feature from the South Australian creative team of director Matt Vesely, writer Lucy Campbell and producer Bettina Hamilton is a striking science fiction thriller. Through the clever containment of a single location and only one on-screen character, Monolith surveils disgraced journalist (rising star Lily Sullivan) as she turns to podcasting to salvage her career, before uncovering a strange artefact that she believes is evidence of an alien conspiracy. The teasing mystery is a product of the ground-breaking Film Lab: New Voices initiative, and uses its creative restraint to compelling advantage. 7.45pm: TÁR TÁR marks the welcome return of acclaimed director Todd Field, who also wrote and produced the film, and whose last project was the Oscar© nominated 2006 Little Children. Starring and Executive Produced by Festival guest, Cate Blanchett, winner of The Volpi Cup for Best Actress at the 2022 Venice International Film Festival for her performance in the film. WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 3 6pm: The Last Daughter In this Adelaide Film Festival Investment Fund film, Brenda Matthews, who directs with Nathaniel Schmidt, is on a mission to unearth the truth about her past, and to reconcile the two sides of her family. Brenda’s first memories were of growing up in a loving white foster family, before she was suddenly taken away and returned to her Aboriginal family. Decades later, she feels disconnected from both halves of her life. But the traumas of her past do not lie quietly buried. So, she goes searching for the foster family with whom she had lost all contact. Along the way she uncovers long-buried secrets, government lies, and the possibility for deeper connections to family and culture. Larissa Behrendt mentored both directors. Producers are Simon Williams and Brendon Skinner. 7.45pm: Triangle of Sadness Ruben Östlund made it two Palme d’Ors from his last two films at Cannes with this darkly hilarious satire of celebrity culture, where beauty is the main form of currency. Hunky cologne model Carl and his influencer girlfriend Yaya hit the big time when they are invited on a luxury cruise. Aboard we will find a selection of rich trash: Russian oligarchs, arms dealers, a fertiliser baron, all under the command of an alcoholic Marxist captain (of course played by Woody Harrelson). It will all end badly—or at least let’s hope so—leaving the survivors stranded on a desert island and fighting for survival. AFF CEO & Creative Director, Mat Kesting, said: “A big thank you to the people of Adelaide who are coming out in huge numbers to support the Festival and to celebrate courageous filmmakers from South Australia and around the world – from families at screenings of Wizard of Oz and Jaws, cinephiles watching films in more than 20 different languages, Australian film lovers enjoying home-grown talent and Adelaide’s underground scene who have turned out in their hundreds for films such as Ribspreader.” SA Minister for the Arts, Andrea Michaels, said: “A huge congratulations to the Adelaide Film Festival team on achieving box office so early in the season. This shows the appetite for outstanding new feature films and documentaries in this state and it’s why the South Australian Government is supporting the Festival with an extra $2 million to annualise the event from 2023.’’ |
