New Zealand theatre group A Slightly Isolated Dog are back this Adelaide Cabaret Festival with their production of Jekyll & Hyde. The classic story is told… differently.
We all know one Mr Hyde, the person who does all those things that you shouldn’t do, malicious, hedonistic and indulgent. Equality education and entertain A Slighty Isolated Dog bring their Incidentally cheeky, quick witted and casually style to their interpretation of this classic tale.
Starting in and around the audience, the line of the start of the show is blurred with curious and comedic interactions with the audience. This may seem in oxious at first.. But the show cleverly uses these audience insights to involve everyone in the show. Incredibly clever use of props and quick witted inclusion of ‘voluntolds’ make the show unexpectedly hilarious.
It isn’t just the hilarious and relatable modern day take of the story that captures you, but the intermittent pauses in the show for modern and playfully relevant renditions of songs to help communicate the story.
A reminder of innate human flaws, and the darkness we all have. And the consequences of pushing it down (or not).
A great show for those new to cabaret or theatre or seasoned goers. I hope we see more of this group.
