A huge crowd of 97,479 witnessed jockey Kerrin McEvoy and trainer Robert Hickmott clinch a second Emirates Melbourne Cup, as Almandin secured a narrow victory, awarding owner Lloyd Williams a record fifth win in the $6.2 million dollar race.
Seven-year-old gelding Almandin just edged out Heartbreak City, while pre-race favourite Hartnell was third.
This year’s win adds to McEvoy’s Cup triumph aboard Brew in 2000, while Hickmott trained Green Moon to the win for Lloyd Williams in 2012.
Victoria Racing Club (VRC) Chief Executive Simon Love said this year’s Emirates Melbourne Cup was a truly thrilling spectacle.
“The Emirates Melbourne Cup attracts the finest international staying horses as well as thousands of people who travel to Melbourne from interstate and overseas to be part of the race that stops a nation.
“It’s brilliant to see the Emirates Melbourne Cup trophy remain in Victoria, with Lloyd Williams cementing his place in history, and Kerrin McEvoy combining with Robert Hickmott to deliver an exciting finish to our great race,” Mr Love said.
The team of Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott claimed three wins on Emirates Melbourne Cup Day, while trainers Darren Weir and Peter and Paul Snowden each secured a double.
International jockeys Joao Moreira and Ryan Moore both celebrated a winner today, with Brazilian Moreira coming very close to tasting Emirates Melbourne Cup success aboard Heartbreak City.
The popular Birdcage Enclosure was home to a host of celebrities including international guest of the VRC and Emirates, Elsa Pataky; Jennifer Hawkins, Rachael Finch and Taj Burrow at Myer; Olympians Cate and Bronte Campbell, Mack Horton, Tom Burton, Chloe Esposito, Charlotte Caslick, Catherine Skinner, and Paralympian Dylan Alcott at Lavazza; and Maria Menounos at Mumm.
At Myer Fashions on the Field, Olivia Moor took out the Women’s Racewear daily final in a bright red and white dress and tartan millinery both made by her mother. Olivia will compete for the Victoria title and entry into the National Final on Crown Oaks Day.
