Explosive new hit from Japan!
Pounding onto the the stage, HIRAKUZA isn’t here to mess around exploding straight into a sumo match right in front of your eyes.
Coming from Osaka, Japan, The Sumo Show HIRAKUZA is in Australia for the first time and only coming to Adelaide for the Adelaide Fringe.
The Sumo Show show cases former professional sumo wrestlers performing their National Sport. You can even get a photo with the performers after the show if you are lucky.
As you walk into a tent of rhythmic drumming and a sense of anticipation. Then BAM the referee starts the proceedings and two Sumo wrestlers are straight into a match. The initial excitement is complemented by an ‘explainer’ version and demonstration of things like exercises, moves, faults, and winning techniques. Presented in English HIRAKUZA is equally informative as it is entertaining. After meeting the Sumos you are invested and rooting for your favourite character.
There is something memorising and calming about watching a sport with such rich history and ritual. As always, getting a good seat is important to really see the onground action, and without staggered seating this can be a challenge. But layered with custom and tradition, it is a refreshing change from the raucous dance music of late night party shows, this is a great show to include in your Fringe scheduling.
HIRAKUZA is on Tuesday to Sunday all through Fringe at the Garden of Unearthly Delights, in the Roundhouse – the one next to the Big Wheel.
