Fringe Review: Shell Shock

By Tony Polese · On February 17, 2020

Shell Shock or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder [PTSD], as it is now known, follows the fictional story of British soldier Tommy Atkins, returning from deployment in the Middle East.  Adapted from the book by Neil Watkins, whilst not an autobiography, it is based on the collective experiences of many veterans trying to adjust back into civilian life whilst battling the tragic consequences that war has inflicted on their mental health.

In this one man show, Tim Marriott superbly inhabits the character of Tommy as we bear witness to his downward spiral.  Whilst it may be uncomfortable to watch at times this is such an important issue which has been largely swept under the carpet as our forgotten heroes continue to suffer and lack adequate recognition and resources.  With current calls for a Royal Commision into veteran suicide please ensure you see this play to increase awareness of the challenges facing our returning veterans.

Showing at The Garage International during the Adelaide Fringe Festival
