Fringe Review: AJ Holmes

By Tony Polese · On February 21, 2020

What: AJ Holmes: Yeah, But Not Right Now
Where: The Bally at Gluttony – Rymill Park
Duration: 60 minutes
When: Now through to March 15
Genre: Comedy / Musical Theatre

Having played the role of Elder Cunningham in The Book of Mormon on Broadway, the US Tour, the West End, Melbourne and Sydney Holmes the only way was up for AJ Holmes as he has arrived at the Adelaide Fringe! As he stated “it’s not a regular show, it’s an act of God!”

A few late comers to the show were given a colourful berating in true show tune style which set the tone for a funny and quick-witted hour. Holmes showed us he is a beast on the piano and the songs about his life gave us a hysterical insight to his comical dilemmas. The show mainly focussed on his family and relationships with many funny stories to sing about.

The Mum and Facebook story was one we all could relate to and that is what makes Holmes so likable and relatable. His animated facial expressions and quirky body movements have you constantly smiling. He had the audience in the palm of his hand!

Watch out if you’re a beautiful girl in the front row. The funny exchange had us laughing and the girl blushing. He also had one of the guys in the front row blushing but for different reasons as he was named Fuck Boy! Holmes knows how to turn an everyday day life story into a side-splitting song.

The final song was the most hilarious and had the audience roaring with laughter. A song about poo. The only way to appreciate it is to buy a ticket and go see the show.
