Adelaide Fringe Review – Tubular Bells for Two

By Tony Polese · On February 19, 2017

Two Aussie blokes, Aidan Roberts and Daniel Holdsworth run around on stage playing 20+ instruments whilst replicating Mike Oldfield’s seminal album “Tubular Bells”.  Composed in 1973 this album was the first release on Richard Branson’s start up Virgin Records, which sold over 30 million copies launching the Virgin brand.
The Tubular Bell cultists and a few “virgins” were out in force at the opening night to marvel at the choreographed musical spectacle.  Watching these two musical “acrobats” was mesmerising and even if you are not a Mike Oldfield fan you are bound to be familiar with some of his work. It’s highwire adventure waiting for them to fail in some way and yes they did make a mistake part way through but this only enhanced the experience as you become all too aware of how complex the execution must be.
Whilst the “A” side was sublime I must admit the “B” side, like most B side singles, didn’t reach the same heights however the true believers were moved to a standing ovation.
