Adelaide Fringe Review: Straight Outta Compton – the boys are back

By Tony Polese · On February 23, 2017

Before a packed out audience, the two-hour show kicked off with a video of the four comedians, Joe Avati, George Kapiniaris, Rob Shehadie and Tahir, preparing for a compo claim with NWA’s ‘Straight Outta Compton’ playing.  This set the scene for the night and got everyone pumped up for the show.

The production showcased the versatility of the four, each doing a standup of their best one-liners, stories and ethnic impersonations.

Re-wording Tone Loc’s 90s RnB anthem ‘Wild Thing’ to ‘Wog Thing’, George Kapiniaris walked out on stage and gave a side-splittingperformance that was original and hilarious.

The group’s first skit ‘Ethnic Anger Management’ received barrel laughs from the crowd but it was Rob Shehadie as host of game show ‘Who wants to be on Compo’ that really brought the house down.

Rob Shehadie (also affectionately knowns as Rocky in ‘Pizza’) gave a hilarious and unpredictable stand up show that involved crowd participation.

The show weaved in short skits from classic cult movies such as Star Wars, Matrix and Phonebooth, where the four comedians had cleverly superimposed themselves into scenes.

Tahir – great Turkish raconteur and half of ‘The Habibs are Here’ – delivered a very clever and polished show.  The crowd really connected with his jokes (comparing today to the ‘good ol’ days’) and he kept the energy high!

Joe Avati, comedy producer and Comedian, finished up and there was no shortage of cultural references on growing up in an ethnic household.  The crowd really connected with his stories about Nonna and Poppa.

With over two hours of solid side-splitting comedy it was great value for money.  This show is a must see!!!
