Adelaide Fringe: Dirty Tattooed Circus Bastards

By Tony Polese · On February 25, 2019

What: Dirty Tattooed Circus Bastards
Where: Gluttony – The Empire
Duration: 60 minutes
Genre: Circus & Physical Theatre/Comedy

(Reviewed by John Glennie)

A late-night, definitely adults-only show. These two very hairy, very tattooed Irishmen were entertaining and hilarious from start to finish.

They kick off with several juggling demonstrations before declaring how easy they are when using “soft” juggling implements. Declaring their show as “more dangerous” they tip out a bag of assorted implements they bought from Bunnings. This included hammers, pruning shears, knives and an assortment of things supposedly given to them by previous crowd members.

I just love the Irish accent and humour – especially when they pick on the English, as one unfortunate Pom behind me found out! Some of the gags and tricks were so funny I thought I may wet myself with laughter (think I may have actually!!). As they mention, it is Cirque Du Soleil meets Motorhead. Few people were spared from the Irish humour. Two young ladies a couple of seats away from me copped it throughout the show but they still had a ball.

The show includes lots of tricks involving juggling an assortment of tools from the Bunnings collection – which members of the audience could pick – as well as whips, an axe and the grand-finale involving broken glass! When getting the crowd involved I, stupid enough to sit in the front row, finished up with a sweaty, hairy stomach pressed up against my face!!

I only took a ticket to this show after seeing Martin, one of the duo, in a 15-minute comedy sketch at The Historian on Fringe opening night. He was so damn funny I just had to see this show and I had the best laugh I have had in a long time.

If you are sensitive to bad language, then don’t go. Otherwise, I highly recommend this as a must-see show!
