Behemoth, Anthrax, Slayer
Adelaide entertainment theatre
13/03/19
Doors opening at 1815
Stage is set for Adelaides chance to say goodbye to thrash giants SLAYER.
Joining them on this farewell tour are Polish blackened metal act Behemoth and American thrash God’s Anthrax.
The decision to move the show from Entertainment Centre to the Entertainment Theatre has come at a cost to many an unhappy punter who In normal Adelaide style attempted to buy a ticket at the last minute. After the usual line-up to check out the merch, which was reasonably priced, unfortunately there wasn’t any T-shirt with all three bands and tour dates, but you can’t get everything you want.
It was time to head into the theatre to await the power of Behemoth. From the starting track that introduced the Polish boys onto the stage you could tell you were in for a set of true dark theatre. Behemoth opened with Wolves ov Siberia and the punters were eating up the opening act like a hot dinner.
Great sound and mixing along with the stage majesty that this well polished blackened death metal act always delivers. The finale was an epic drum piece with all members that left me wanting more. Playing a short set but with a great selection from multiple albums set the night off to a flying start.
Now we awaited the almighty Anthrax. Being a huge Anthrax and Slayer fan I was hyped to see the boys again as last time was at Soundwave with John Bush on vocals. With Joey Belladona back as main man I knew we were in for an old school set of 80s thrash anthems.
From the 1st beat of Caught in a Mosh it was obvious that Anthrax were not here to be upstaged by anyone, it may have been a less theatrical show than Behemoth but the razor sharp guitar attack from Scot Ian and John Donais and insane drumming of Charlie Benante it was enough to keep the punters thrashing and the heads banging.
How can you fault these guys, after 30 years of pumping out great tunes and with so many albums to cover in such a short set, they didn’t miss a trick.Scott Ian stomps around the stage like a madman and has the energy that never stops, I’m sure you could bottle his sweat and sell it as an energy drink. They could have played for two hours and still missed tracks I would love to hear live,by the time Antisocial started blasting I had to join the mosh. It was short-lived with the set coming to an end finishing off with Indians and a homage to a lost metal brother.
Even though It was over faster than I would have liked, it had set the mood for every black T-shirt wearing metalhead to see the band that unfortunately we will never see live again. It was time for Adelaide to give Slayer a metal farewell.
The lights dimmed and the curtain was illuminated with crosses that inverted and pentagrams a plenty as the opening riff to Relentless blasted out. Watching Slayer on stage its hard to think why they are giving this up, they as tight as ever and make you feel like they could continue playing for another 30 years. But best to go out on a high and that’s what they intended to do this night.
You could feel the heat from the stage like the fires of hell bellowing down on us as Tom Araya, Kerry King, Gary Holt and Paul Bostaph absolutely tore up the stage. The mosh was total mayhem as you would expect with this kind of energy being thrown full force at us as Slayer gave a huge set of songs from 10 albums with a good portion coming from Seasons In The Abyss.
Back drop changes with a great tribute to the late great Jeff Hanneman. And the fire, oh the fire!!!
With an encore that was metal moshing madness it was time to say goodbye and thank you to Slayer. After 38 years of releasing pure unadulterated thrash and mind blowing riffs Tom Araya looked down on the crowd soaking in the love and respect they all so well deserved.
Thankyou for the music Slayer, and who knows, if a clash of the titans tour or the big four ever happens, maybe we will see Slayer come out of retirement
