Words by Samuel Sunter
Rarely am I stunned by a performance, but Jake Shimabukuro’s lighting fast fingers gliding across his ukulele left me in complete awe. Currently on a national tour, Jake played a mix of old works and pieces from his upcoming album set for release later this year. Hosted by The Gov, his performance was incredible and his talent is undeniable.
As a spectator fresh to Jake’s work, I cannot say that I was familiar with his style or sound. The idea of a ukulele performance sounded intriguing but I couldn’t help think that the technicality and variety of music would be limited. Despite this ill-conceived thought, the music was diverse, melodic and beautiful. Jumping from slow contemporary ballads to upbeat covers and original compositions, Jake’s technical ability on the ukulele astounded me. His fingers moved effortlessly quick and I struggled to follow their tracks with my eyes. The atmosphere of the venue was relaxed and inviting, I’m sure that most of the audience were confused by how complex music could sound from such a tiny instrument.
Although a thoroughly entertaining experience, I am unsure if Jake’s music will appeal to everyone. Having said that, anyone who can appreciate his technical ability and musicianship will enjoy his performance. The show features a variety of genres, and to acknowledge that every note is delivered from a tiny ukulele makes Jake’s performance even more incredible and unique. I would strongly suggest searching his music online to witness his talent first hand.
