In the Chair: They maybe a little Hazy but on Another Day they are Great Gable

By Tony Polese · On April 3, 2022

In the Chair is a regular feature on Eventalaide, highlighting artists from across Australia and occasionally overseas. Everyone gets the same questions. It is just meant to be a bit of fun so please treat it as such.

Questions by Geoff Jenke

Great Gable formed in 2014 and play music for the people. They are freshly baked cookies on a Sunday, they are the greatest of friends. Fall in love with the smooth vocals, shimmering guitars, the ebb and flow of the rhythm section, fall in love with Great Gable. 2019 was a year of heavy touring for Great Gable, but along with this was the growing feeling that the time was right to record their debut album. Between touring stints around the country and sold out shows on their first trip to New Zealand, they carved out time to write the songs that would form the basis for the record. Written in a cabin among the Karri forests and a Chestnut Farm in the south west of Western Australia, Tracing Faces is an album that fully reflects the solid relationship that the band have after years of writing and touring together. The songs bring together the band’s diverse musical tastes, with each member offering their own unique and considerable talent to the writing and recording process. The result is a collection of music that showcases the incredible range and influence of the band, with no two songs alike.

Great Gable play Adelaide
on Friday 8 April at The Lions Art Factory.

Great Gable – Our Love // Acoustic

____________________________________________________________________________________

Name: Alex (Lead Vocal) Matt (Lead Guitar) Chris (Bass Guitar) Callum (Drums)

Band: Great Gable

What was the first record you bought with your own money and where from?
Alex: For Emma, For Ever Ago – Bon Iver

80’s or 90’s Music:
Matt: 90’s music

What music are currently listening to?
Cal: Mk.gee, Blink 182 and Pedro Martins

The Best live artist/band you’ve seen:
Chris: My folks took me to see Gotye back in 2011. It was the first time I’d noticed stage lighting, visual projection and how they have the ability to enhance the feelings being expressed by the performer. That gig left a big impression on me

Your “In the mood for love” song:
Alex: Harvest moon – Neil Young

Your favourite Saturday night party record?
Matt: Favourite Worst Nightmare by Arctic Monkeys gets me hype

Your favourite Sunday morning chill out record?
Cal: I’d for sure be making some brunch while listening to Relaxin by Miles Davis

Which song do you wish you had written?
Chris: Drift by Great Gable

Roger Daltry once said “Rock N Roll has no future”. Do you agree with him?
Alex
: Rock n roll will always be lurking in the shadows

Vinyl, CD or Streaming?
Matt
: Vinyl is always the winner but I stream mostly

If you could record or play live with any artist (dead or alive), who would it be?
Cal: I’d love to play drums for Rage Against The Machine – the tunes are sick and they had such awesome crowds

What is the most useless talent you have?
Chris: In high school I could play Raining Blood by Slayer on Expert Difficulty on Guitar Hero III

Your finest recorded moment?
Alex: I accidentally burped into the mic during a gig that was recorded for triple J live at the wireless. Beer and singing don’t mix…

Who is your musical hero and what one question would you ask them?
Matt
: John Lennon, I would ask him if he wants to jam

Dying, peacefully on your death bed, what song would you like to hear?
Cal
: That’s such a tough one but the first one that came to my head was this song by John Raymond with Gilad Hekselman called Minor Silverstein. Super chill song and makes me feel chill

Stuck on a desert island for a year and can only take three albums. What would they be?
Chris
: Enema of The State – Blink 182 / Blood Sugar Sex Magik- Red Hot Chili Peppers / Rage Against The Machine – Self Titled

Favourite all time movie:
Alex: Fellowship of The Ring or Blues Brothers! Can’t decide.

If you drove an ice cream van, what music would you play?
Matt: The Beach Boys would suit, probably the Wouldn’t It Be Nice instrumental on repeat

Best show you have ever played in your career:
Cal: I think Meow in Wellington was the best, the crowd was insane, and the supports crushed it too, it’s hard to describe how good it felt but yeah was awesome

Any backstage incident that makes you laugh?
Chris: Watching someone back stage take a sip from a glass of what they thought was water only to realise mid gulp that it was a pint of straight Gin

Ed Sheeran or Robbie Willams?
Alex: Robbie Willams!

Who is the nicest person in Rock n Roll at the moment?
Matt
: I’ve never met him but I feel like I’d enjoy a beer with Sam Fender

What do you hope the next 12 months holds for you?
Alex: Gigs!!!!!!!
Matt: Hopefully no more cancelled shows, also I want to buy a new guitar soon
Cal: Can release new music yew!
Chris: Playing live music and enjoying the adventures along the way.

In the past six months, Great Gable have released their new singles Hazy, Another Day and most recently Our Love.   The music is their first with new label Rainbow Valley Records helmed by ARIA award-winning artist and producer Matt Corby and his long-time producer, writer and collaborator, Alex Henriksson.

Alex had this to say of the signing, “Great Gable is as real as they come. They know what it takes to be one of the best and are on a constant pursuit of this dream.  There are no fancy tricks to get it to where it is, only solid musicianship, attention to detail and an honest connection to the musical spirit that guides us all.”

“The new cut has all the hallmarks of the distinctive, sun-drenched sound the band have cultivated… warm, buzzy melodies, swaying rhythms and a backdrop of lush, layered textures.”
– MUSIC FEEDS

“..captivating, sun-drenched guitar-pop..”
