In the Chair: He Shoulda Coulda, he’s Budjerah

By Tony Polese · On April 2, 2022

In the Chair is a regular feature on Eventalaide, highlighting artists from across Australia and occasionally overseas. Everyone gets the same questions. It is just meant to be a bit of fun so please treat it as such.

Questions by Geoff Jenke

In 2020, Australia was introduced to the spectacular voice of Budjerah: a new, homegrown kind of R&B star. Possessing songwriting ingenuity and old-soul wisdom, it quickly became abundantly clear that, for a lot of us, Budjerah was the kind of figure we’d been missing. “When will the moment come? I’m tired of wasting time,” the then-18-year-old Coodjinburra musician sang in the opening strains of his debut single, the earthy R&B jam “Missing You”. Now 20, and with a debut EP under his belt—as well as an ARIA Breakthrough Artist award from 5x nominations, previous support slots with Thelma Plum, The Avalanches, and Lime Cordiale, a collaboration with PNAU, and an upcoming world tour lined up with Vance Joy—Budjerah is ready to charge forward.

In less than 50 words describe your music, your band (if applicable) and yourself.
I make indie/r’n’b/pop music and I really like singing. I come from a family of musicians and surfers, who played in church heaps when I was growing up. My favorite thing to do is to perform live.

What was the first record you bought with your own money and where from?
The first record I bought was Lemonade by Beyoncé. It came out when I was in year 8 at school and I remember hearing everyone talk about how incredible it was, so I got an iTunes gift card with my saved birthday money and downloaded it onto my iPod. Still one of my favourite albums ever

80’s or 90’s Music:
I’m gonna go with 80s music. 90s is cool but I find myself listening to more 80s music for some reason.

What music are currently listening to?
I’ve been listening to a lot of D’Angelo lately. My favourite record of his is VooDoo

The Best live artist/band you’ve seen:
Would have to be Matt Corby at Splendour in the Grass 2019. His band were so on point and then he did a duet with Tina Arena. It was a historical moment

Your “In the mood for love” song:
Misty by Sarah Vaughan

Your favourite Sunday morning chill out record?
At Last by Etta James. It’s just a good record to wake up and clean to I think

Which song do you wish you had written?
I wish I wrote 1+1 by Beyonce, just because I sing it all the time

Vinyl, CD or Streaming?
I’m really into CDs. My car is really old and only plays CDs, cassettes and the radio. No AUX or bluetooth connection. I always get a CD of a record, if can, for my car.

If you could record or play live with any artist (dead or alive), who would it be?
I would want do a duet with Mariah Carey. She’s done a lot of really nice duets over the years and I think it would be really fun and amazing if I ever got the opportunity

Your finest recorded moment?
My finest recorded moment in my opinion is the Live record of my song “Shoulda Coulda” which I sang with Ainslie Wills. I was sick when we recorded it but I think I nailed it

Who is your musical hero and what one question would you ask them?
My musical hero is Beyonce. I take a lot of inspirations from her vocally, and I would ask her about how she does vocal growls. The way she does them is very unique I think, and I can’t figure out how she does them the way she does.

Stuck on a desert island for a year and can only take three albums. What would they be?
1. Lemonade – Beyonce
2. Songs In The Key of Life – Stevie Wonder
3. Voodoo – D’Angelo

Favourite all time movie?
The Lion King.

Best show you have ever played in your career?
My favourite so far has to be Party at the Apocalypse Festival in Hobart. The crowd were amazing, I love them. My band and I were having a really good day that day as well, so we were very relaxed on stage and we just played great.

What do you hope the next 12 months hold for you?
My hope is that I can keep doing heaps of live shows. I love performing, traveling and seeing and meeting all the different people that I come across. It’s an adventure.

Budjerah has a new single out, What Should I Do? and a new EP Conservations on April 8th 2022. To celebrate the release, Budjerah announces a world tour, starting in Australia this April and touring Ireland, England, Germany, The Netherlands and France before travelling to the United States in May/June.

Budjerah is ready to charge forward.
