In the Chair – He has a Cherry Afterglow, he’s Ash Naylor (Even)

By Tony Polese · On September 22, 2021

Questions – Geoff Jenke

Even, Australia’s finest purveyors of Pop n roll, Even, have a new digital single out. Even have been together now for over 25 years without a change in line up and are still producing quality songs. The single, Cherry Afterglow is a slight change in direction but still the great song you expect from the band.

Normally, Ash Naylor would have to be Australia’s busiest man in rock. Besides Even he has worked with the Rockwiz Orchestra, is a member of The Church and Paul Kelly’s touring band, has worked live with The Stems and has just been recording with Vika & Linda Bull on their new album, The Wait, just to name a few affiliations. If it wasn’t for this dreaded “thing” going around, Ash would be out on the road constantly. Someone recently commented “Is there a band in Australia he is not a member of.”

Even should have a new album out in the upcoming months.

Name: Ashley Naylor

Alias: Ash, Nayls

Band (If applicable) Even

In less than 50 words describe your music, your band (if applicable) and yourself.
I describe our music as Pop’n’roll.

_____________________________________________________________________________________

What was the first record you bought with your own money and where from?
I think it was a Led Zeppelin LP from Muirs in Niddrie. Mum worked at the company so I got a discount.

60’s or 70’s Music:
Both.

What music are currently listening to?
Jimi Hendrix Experience, James Gang, Belles Will Ring, Roberta Flack.

The Best live artist/band you’ve seen:
Prince.

Your “In the mood for love” song;
‘In The Mood’ by Robert Plant.

Your favourite Saturday night party record?
I don’t host or attend Saturday night parties any more but back in the day The Rolling Stones ‘Goat’s Head Soup’ LP used to be a good rev up.

Your favourite Sunday morning chill out record?
At the moment…’Loveless’- My Bloody Valentine.

Which song do you wish you had written?
‘Baby It’s You’- Promises or ‘Tin Soldier’ – Small Faces.

Roger Daltry once said “Rock N Roll has no future”. Do you agree with him?
Disagree. For a young person picking up an instrument and discovering music for themselves, Rock and Roll has a future.

Vinyl, CD or Streaming?
All of the above.

If you could record or play live with any artist (dead or alive), who would it be?
David Bowie.

What is the most useless talent you have?
Good at folding towels.

Your finest recorded moment?
It should be out later this year…

If you could open a show for any artist/band, who would it be?
Tough question…..its always tough opening for bands cause the audience is not there to see you.
Beatles- Festival Hall 1964.

Stuck on a desert island for a year and can only take three albums. What would they be?
‘Electric Ladyland’ Jimi Hendrix Experience.
‘The Blurred Crusade’ The Church.
‘If I Could Only Remember My Name’ David Crosby.

Favourite all time movie;
The King of Comedy.

Who would you rather be for a day, Mick Jagger or Keith Richard?
Mick Taylor.

Best show you have ever played in your career;
Probably Even at Spotted Mallard 2019.

Paul McCartney or Neil Young?
Neil, purely for the guitar freedom. I do love Paul though.

Who is the nicest person in Rock n Roll at the moment?
Matthew Cotter (from Even).

What do you hope the next 12 months holds for you?
Opportunity to travel and perform live music.

Hopefully we will see Even live again in the new year. In the meantime;

You’ve seen the new single Cherry Afterglow above, now check out Even’s previous single Six Monkeys:

There is a full live show of Ash playing solo and also a full Even set at
