HAIM ‘THE STEPS’ NEW SINGLE & VIDEO OUT NOW

By Tony Polese · On March 4, 2020

After revealing yesterday that their highly anticipated third studio album, Women In Music Pt. III, will be released on April 24th, Haim have shared their new single, ‘The Steps,’ from the forthcoming album today. ‘The Steps’ pushes guitar to the forefront in a way the band has not done before. Clean, chorused electric guitar, overdriven lead lines, and strummed acoustic 12-Strings lock in together to generate what feels like an endless chug. The result is one of Haim’s fastest and heaviest songs to date. ‘The Steps’ was written by the band along with longtime collaborators Ariel Rechsthaid and Rostam Batmanglij. The single, as well as the new album, was produced by Danielle, Ariel, and Rostam. Alana, Danielle and Este have also continued to collaborate with renowned director Paul Thomas Anderson to shoot both the music video for ‘The Steps’ as well as the band’s new album art (above).

View the official video for ‘The Steps’, which Danielle directed alongside Anderson, here. Haim’s third album, Women In Music Pt. III, is now available for pre-order here.

Speaking on the album title, Danielle shares, “the name came to me in a dream and I woke up laughing so I told my sisters.” Alana adds, “I liked it because we are literally women in music and we always get written about that way, so it seemed cool to make it our own and control the narrative. It made me think about some of our experiences more.”And Este says, “I just thought it was funny, plus the initials are WIMP3. Wimp is a hilarious word.”

Haim first returned with new music last summer with the release of the “breezy and beautiful single” (The Face) ‘Summer Girl,’ which was added to Radio 1’s A-List on release. “Having more or less mastered pop precision, a little wonkiness suits them well,” noted NME, while Clash called it “an incredibly catchy return, a soaring, highly positive piece of summer-fresh guitar pop.” The band followed that up with the “emotionally charged new bop” (DIY) ‘Now I’m In It,’ and the poignant, reflective ballad ‘Hallelujah’ to close out 2019, “a real pearl from a group who never let their standards slip” (Clash).  All three songs will be featured on the band’s forthcoming album.

Haim once again teamed up with two longtime collaborators: Grammy Award-winning producer Ariel Rechtshaid (Adele, Blood Orange, Carly Rae Jepsen) and Rostam Batmanglij (Charli XCX, Solange, Frank Ocean) to produce the new album. Women In Music Pt. III is the follow up to Haim’s sophomore album, Something To Tell You, which was released in July 2017. ‘Something To Tell You debuted at No.4 on the ARIA album chart, No. 2 on the UK chart and  No. 7 on the Billboard 200 following release and was critically acclaimed by NME, The FADER, NPR, and more. The band’s sophomore album was declared “a gleaming triumph of artisanal pop music” by Stereogum, Pitchfork called the album “slyly complex” and The Observernoted that it “finds them adding a bittersweet edge to their fusion of retro pop styles.”
