Adelaide’s Cameron Goodall stars in the world premiere of The Sound of Falling Stars which was written and directed by another Adelaide doyen, Robyn Archer.
Goodall deftly channels famous male singers who died too young starting in the 50’s with Hank Williams and moving chronologically to include Elvis Presley, Sid Vicious, Kurt Cobain, Michael Hutchence and more. Chameleon like Goodall is superb in transitioning both physically and metaphorically from one character to the next interspersing songs with cleverly written monologues detailing life, love, family and death. He is well supported on stage by keyboard player Enio Pozzebon and accordionist/guitarist George Butrumlis of Zydeco Jump who provide backing vocals and some commentary. It was interesting to see a version of Highway to Hell with an accordion solo but this is the differentiation of singing a bunch of covers versus creating an artistic vision which the collaboration of Archer and Goodall managed to achieve. The well written monologues bring the characters alive and expertly segue from one to the next. Goodall is the consummate performer and it is hard to envision anyone being able to bring these dead artists to life again in such a dramatic and mesmerizing way.
Showing at the Dunstan Playhouse as part of the Cabaret Festival 2017.
