Dinosaur Jr at Hindley Street Music Hall Review

By John Goodridge · On February 28, 2024

Dinosaur Jr are an American rock band that have been producing music for some forty years, with front man, J Mascis at the helm this whole time. In 1993, they released their classic album Where You Been. On a warm summer evening in Adelaide, at Hindley Street Music Hall, fans were treated to a rendition of the album, with some more recent hits thrown in for good measure.

Opening three-piece Melbourne band Stepmother, were suitably heavily psychedelic and fuzz driven to war up the crowd. Their dark and heavy songs reminded this reviewer of Slowly Slowly and Luca Brasi. Definitely one to watch.

This album has to be experienced live, at least once in your life. The banks of Marshall amps produce a sound that is more felt than listened to. To compare it to listening to the album on your home stereo is impossible. An incredible wall of sound, as stereotypical as that phrase has become, envelops the entire three level audience.

The original line-up is here tonight, with drummer Murph being the glue that holds the chaos together. Bass guitarist Louis Barlow channels the energy and spirit of the songs in an energetic and enthusiastic way. By contrast, whilst J Mascis’ singing is less animated, it is no less passionate.

It is almost unbelievable what sound these three musicians can produce from their drums, guitars, and amplifiers, but it was like an intense surfing session. Moments of calm and relative peace are suddenly punctuated with thrashing energy. Feels like spears lacerating your heart at times. Primal and restorative. An anthem for the soul.

Following with another half a dozen songs from the collection of albums over the years, the set was complete. However, many wondered about “Freak Scene”. Returning to stage, their questions were answered. This was followed by a cover of the Cure’s “Just Like Heaven” which has become a staple in many of their recent shows.

The assembled throng filed out from the Music Hall to compare notes and bask in the experience that had been Dinosaur Jr.  It was a powerful experience and one that will be remembered fondly.
