English alternative indie-pop group (for need of a genre descriptive to categorize these guys) Alt-J commenced their Oceania tour here in Adelaide, before heading off to play other major cities around our great island home, then hopping across the Tasman to play Wellington and Auckland. They were supported solidly by the rocking all-girl quartet from California – Warpaint.
Alt-J formed back in 2007, and have since had a steady rise to music fame with their first major acknowledgement coming in 2012, when they were awarded the British Mercury Prize for their first ‘math-rock’ studio album An Awesome Wave. A Best Alternative Album Grammy nomination in 2014 for their follow up album This Is All Yours soon followed, along with high-end gigs such as headlining numerous European music festivals.
I had only heard these guys occasionally on Triple J, and I was quite blown away by their unique style of ‘folktronica’ when they took to the stage at around 9pm. Accompanying their almost ethereal sound, their stage-presence was amplified by ingenious use of creative lighting, which more than made up for their lack of ‘physical’ performance. They provided a strong live performance, with a well thought-out blend of old and new songs that the mixed crowd thoroughly enjoyed.
Alt-J’s latest offering Relaxer is on sale now from all the usual places.
