Adelaide’s favourite bar isn’t just poppin’ – she’s about to burst!
Two years after it first shook up Adelaide’s bar scene with its drag divas, cocktails and cabaret, East End hotspot MARY’S POPPIN is getting bigger and better with a glittering, multi-level expansion opening August 23.
And RuPaul’s Drag Race stars Monique Heart and Jinkx Monsoon will be there to launch it in style, with a free opening night party for everyone to get their sparkle on.
Doubling its size across two fabulous floors on Synagogue Place, the new Mary’s will be positively pimped out with mirrored ceilings and walls, light-up go-go dancing cages and more than 60 metres of wrap-around neon – all underneath a giant, glowing rainbow.
The totally remodelled ground floor will also feature an additional stage, upgraded state-of-the-art sound system and a new, high-tech Video Disco Bar where punters can dance to pop, disco, R&B and hip-hop hits bathed in the glow of music videos from giant screens.
The hot new look is a re-imagining by internationally renowned designer Michael Delany, the visionary genius behind iconic Melbourne hangouts Honkytonks, The Bottom End and XE54 and Sydney’s Club 77 – as well as the original Mary’s Poppin.
All of Mary’s original playful features – like the floor-to-ceiling crystal chandelier, dancing poles, toilet cubicle “mini discos” and baby grand piano DJ booth – will remain in the upstairs level.
The new MARY’S POPPIN opens to the public on Thursday August 23 with a free opening night party hosted by RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 10 favourite Monique Heart and iconic season five winner Jinkx Monsoon.
“We are so blown away by how much Adelaide loves Mary’s – it’s been packed with queues out the door almost every night since we first opened in 2016,” owner Stephen Craddock says.
“Now with this new multi-level expansion we can spread the love even further. We’re still keeping that fabulous Mary’s vibe that everyone loves, but pumping up the volume 200 per cent.
“It’s going to be a totally unique bar experience unlike anything Adelaide’s seen before – and of course everyone is welcome for a cocktail or two, or three.”
With more room comes more fun, so Mary’s is also expanding its entertainment offering with a great new weekly event: THIRSTDAY.
The fiercest new way for singles to mingle, THIRSTDAY equips bar-goers with custom app technology to meet, greet and get their flirt on in style. Hosted by local legend Vonni and Mary’s very own Wundes every Thursday from 8pm (starting August 30), this is set to turn Adelaide’s dating scene on its head.
Then on Fridays and Saturdays it’s more of the Mary’s you know and love – super-sized! Take in a show from resident drag queens Wundes, Eve Elle, Luci Furr, Stacy and Xai, sip on one of her famous Schlong Island Iced Teas and dance the night away across two fabulous floors.
So polish your sequins, dust off your dancing shoes and follow the glitter trail to Adelaide’s campiest, wildest and sparkliest bar – now bigger and better than ever.
