Beginnings is the third program of the Adelaide Chamber Singers 2022 season and debut of ACS2 (Adelaide Chamber Singers Two), a new ensemble of Adelaide’s emerging Chamber Singers.
The performance was directed by both the current Artistic Director and Conductor Christie Anderson and the founder and Conductor Emeritus of the Adelaide Chamber Singers Dr Carl Crossin OAM.
Set in the beautiful surroundings of the building, Beginnings was a beautiful performance of emerging Adelaide singers. Both directors provided interesting anecdotes that brought the program to life and explained the process of creating this performance. A member of each of the vocal groups of the Adelaide Chamber Singers worked with each section of ACS2 to mentor the singers and develop the performance by the talented new group.
It was refreshing to hear something so pure and the sound created by the vocal layers is captivating. The acoustics of the room (and with a packed audience) contributed to the way these voices transport you through time and space.
The program included pieces new and old. A highlight being Fragments from his Dish – four movements all about food. The Clean Platter with a delightful hook of ‘food, food, food, food,’ was humorously relatable, and included clever hints of sounds such as the tss of a drum kit cymbal. I’m a Train was another interestingly creative piece with vocal lines emulating, you guessed it, the sounds of a train.
The rest of the program was equally impressive and you forget for a moment that the sound is all acapella. Very impressive voices, and if this is the first performance then definitely keep an eye out for ACS2 in the future.
