2026 Adelaide Festival Review – Tryp 111

By John Goodridge · On March 2, 2026

Tryp 111 was formed from a culmination of artists after several others withdrew from the Festival.

While the event was originally scheduled to be held in the Cloisters at Adelaide University, the stages were moved inside the Uni Bar due to pending thunderstorms.

The afternoon was quite chilled, with several people reclining on beanbags listening to DJ Baby Monet pining some sweet tunes. It was very relaxing with the occasional rain but nothing too outrageous.

Iranian-born, Adelaide based santur player Maryam Rahmani joined composer and pianist Sebastian Collen for an interesting “conversation in music”. Combining traditional classical sounds with experimental departures, the effect was almost hypnotic. It felt cleansing and healing in this world of trouble.

Gadigal based artist, DJ Grand then took the event through the transformation from day to night. She amplified the mood from laid back and chilled to a more energetic vibe. Her tunes had the audience dancing and grooving in preparation for the evening’s music.

NYC artist James K then took to the main stage for the start of her Australian tour. With three albums under her belt, there were a number of dedicated fans in the audience, as well as several who became fans. With an ethereal voice combined with electronic loops and sounds, flashing visuals and a smoky haze, the effect was mesmerising. It felt like love in the air, with the summer storms pending.

British-born, Berlin-based Sam Barker then took to the decks to play his experimental dance music. With breakbeats, dub and ambient techno, the atmosphere shifted into a nightclub style vibe.

The night finished off with devotional music from USA Lyra Pramuk before DJ /rupture took the revellers into the wee hours.

Overall the concept was amazing, talented musicians and DJs pushing the bounds of experimental music throughout the afternoon and evening. A low turnout meant that the atmosphere never reached its full potential, which was more due to the weather than the organisers. Hopefully this concept will resurface again.
