Review: Rucola Café

By Tony Polese · On October 19, 2019

Some of the best wood oven pizza I’ve had in my whole life has been from Rucola Café!

Their dough is absolutely, truly perfect. I cannot fault it. It is just the right thinness and softness with crispy crust. And the pizzas aren’t overfilled with toppings, they are just simple, Italian perfect pizzas.

And you would expect that coming from owners and chefs, hailing from Italy, Giuseppe and Mo, with their fresh-off-the-boat style and attitude, which brings a true sense of authenticity to their café.

Set at an ideal corner on Pirie Street, it’s just a mere 5 minute walk from Rundle Mall! And I absolutely guarantee you will love it. Their venue is big enough to host small functions, such as anniversaries, parties and work functions.

Start off with an entrée such as Trio of Arancini, which is a combination of different large arancini balls, one with spinach, pumpkin and mozzarella, another with porcini mushrooms and truffle and another with Napolitana sauce, pesto and parmesan. My mouth is watering just typing this! Another favourite entrée is their Piatto Prosciutto, which is a plate of Parma prosciutto, fresh Buffalo mozzarella toped with rocket and olive oil! Yum!

What makes Rucola Café special is almost every dish is served with the leafy green known locally in Italy as Rucola, also known as Arugula or as we know it, Rocket! It adds a touch of peppery green, which compliments every dish superbly. And you absolutely cannot go wrong with their pizzas, whether it be their Sicily pizza, with Neapoletana sauce, for di latte cheese, salame, ham, mushrooms and olives, or their Funghi pizza with a truffle paste base, buffalo mozzarella, porcini mushrooms and salsiccia! Every pizza is delicious, and they have vegetarian options too!

Rucola Café also makes a range of pastas, risottos and salads, with options such as their Gnocchi al Pesto, their Risotto Portobello and their Italian salad. The prices are reasonable considering the size , quality of ingredients and taste, and I will definitely be returning again with friends for a good feed!

You can pair your meals with a tasty Italian red wine or beer, or even a coffee and cake for dessert.

You can find Rucola Café at 131 Pirie Street, Adelaide 5000.
