CHU CHU
NEW AUSSIE-ASIAN EATERY IN THE HEART OF THE CBD
Adelaide, SA.: Chu Chu is a fusion restaurant where Eastern flavours meet Western dishes for twists on favourite breakfast and lunch foods. Spam meets relish and buns for an unusual burger; mushroom ragu is stuffed in a hot pocket. Creators Daniel Chu and Kym Reilly have been in the hospitality industry for more than10 years, and currently operate other eateries in the CBD and in the suburbs.
“We saw that people don’t have a lot of time, especially when working in the CBD,” said Daniel. “And sometimes it’s easy to compromise on dining choices. But we knew that healthy doesn’t have to be boring.”
Chu Chu centres around all-day breakfast and lunch options, which are flavourful and healthy without compromising the time it takes to make and serve the dishes. The interior is decorated with a simple, minimalistic and welcoming look. The menu reflects the concept that eating doesn’t have to be a time-consuming inconvenience for people who are working (and that’s also why Chu Chu has a takeaway counter outside of the main dining area).
“I’m extremely passionate about food,” said Daniel Chu, who is also the Head Chef at Chu Chu. “And my main priority is making quality products for each and every customer.”
With his 10 years of culinary experience, Chef Chu created an array of Black Sesame Bun sandwiches, ciabatta rolls, rice bowls, and ramen noodles for lunch. There’s also a Grab & Go menu which features all-day breakfast items like the Benny Pocket, where a poached egg bathed in Kafir Hollandaise is paired with salmon and stuffed inside a soft “pocket” bun.
Chef Chu wanted to “have all the goodness incorporated into a hand-held bundle of goodness.”
“Our Benny Pocket sealed on one end to catch those devilish sauce drops that always try to find your pants, thus ruining your day,” Kym said of the modern take on a classic brunch dish. “Less on the lap, more in the belly, makes for a happy customer and a smaller dry cleaning bill!”
Chu Chu also offers a daily display case of freshly made salads and wraps. Chef Chu uses a lot of locally-sourced produce to ensure customers get the freshest meals possible and to support local farmers. The drink menu includes frozen yoghurt and coconut water smoothies, iced coffee drinks, pots and single serves of 100% fair trade organic Tielka tea, and all-day coffee. Vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options are available.
“We just want customers to enjoy the very limited time they have outside their offices,” said Kym.

Chu Chu’s hours are Monday through Friday, from 6:30 am to 4:00 pm. Chu Chu is located at Shop 6-7, 54 Waymouth Street in Topham Mall.
