Hibernia Café
609 Magill Rd, Magill
1 June 2016
There’s a new café kid on the block, and it’s set to impress! Hibernia, located in the upgraded landmark Magill Institute Building at the top end of Magill Road, is the latest addition to Adelaide couple Stephen Lowery and Zoi Kokoti’s growing café brood. Encapsulating a distinctly different vibe to their other enterprises (Eire Café in Clapham and The Deli in Thebarton), Hibernia is bright, minimalistic and filled with sleek geometric lines.
As you enter through the framed glass doors, your eyes are immediately drawn skyward to the impressive 25-foot high ceilings which give the space a sophisticated and airy feel. Combined with simple treated pine features, stylish succulents and crisp white walls the café has a classy Scandinavian feel whilst remaining warm, welcoming and effortlessly comfortable.
At their Media Launch on Monday, guests were treated to a selection of canapés that Kokoti explained would reflect the still-evolving menu.
Sweetcorn soup with Yarra Valley salmon caviar, gorgonzola, ginger and quince cheesecake and ham hock croquettes with vintage cheddar and a tomato relish were all firm crowd favourites. Other delicious bites on offer included black pudding with crisp potato, maple bacon and caramelised onion as well as smoked mackerel on a baby cos salad with apple, braised fennel and a dill yoghurt dressing. Talk about yumminess!
With a local head chef who has had experience in some of Adelaide’s top restaurants, it’s no wonder Hibernia isn’t afraid to experiment with flavour pairings that surprise and delight.
It’s also probably pertinent to mention that as part of the venue upgrade, Kokoti ensured that along with ample comfortable padded seating and plenty of natural light there are power supply points fitted throughout the building – a nod to their proximity to UniSA Magill Campus and the ever on-the-run lifestyle of office nomads with their laptops in tow. As someone who quite enjoys a decent hot drink while I work, knowing that there is a local café where I can plug my laptop in without worry is definitely a bonus.
So whether it’s for a quick coffee break, a leisurely lunch with friends or to action those pesky forgotten emails, do yourself a favour and head to Hibernia at Magill. Their doors are set to officially open to the public at 7.30am tomorrow (Thursday, June 2nd). For further details, head to their Facebook page.
Special thanks to Hibernia and Adelaide Food Central for giving us a taste of the great things to come at this wonderful venue. We can’t wait to pop by again soon!
