Wine o’clock took on whole new meaning when the Coonawarra Wine Tasting Roadshow hit Adelaide with its event at the Published Art House. Arriving to a sea of glasses and over 180 wines from this small, yet heartfelt community from the Limestone Coast region in South Australia, one immediately sensed the warmth and passion from its people.
The cool climate and renowned terra rossa soils combined with commitment from wine makers new and old, work in harmony to produce sensational Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Chardonnay and Riesling.
Would highly recommend attending a Masterclass Wine event for anyone wanting to educate their pallet or knowledge of a wine region. Langton’s made this possible with representatives from Katnook Estate, Majella, Parker and Petaluma Wineries who showcased two vintages. 2008 Coonawarra vintage is remembered not only for seasonal variability including the extreme heat wave during March which initiated an early start to harvest, but also the high maturities, color and tannin of the fruit. 2008 Majella Cabernet Sauvignon was a stand out!! Dark red in colour with very vibrant purple hues. Plums and blackberries are evident on the nose with subtle eucalyptus and “vanillin” oak. The finish was long and lingering as is Prof, whom I affectionately refer to as “Mr Coonawarra”.
The wines and the winemakers are memorable and what you would expect from a small community only 4 hours drive from Adelaide. Why not pack a picnic lunch or better still, stay over night in Penola and savour as many wineries as possible.
Blessed be thy Wine!!
