60 Nebbiolos under one roof
club nebb goes public at The National Wine Centre
Here’s an idea whose time has come. Interest is at an all-time high in wines from the fascinating red grape Nebbiolo. With a first-ever event on this scale, La Cantina brings the largest tasting of Australian and international Nebbiolos yet to be seen in Adelaide.
La Cantina, Adelaide’s specialist Italian wine store within Mercato – an Italian food & wine emporium at Campbelltown, is showcasing Italy’s premier grape with Adelaide’s first-ever public event dedicated to Nebbiolo.
La Cantina manager Chris Sarandis says; “It’s clear this fascinating grape variety is quickly becoming an obsession. We want to provide Adelaide’s – maybe Australia’s – first comprehensive tasting of where our own wine makers are at with Nebbiolo, and to compare these with examples from elsewhere. Italian wine guru David Ridge has let us borrow the club nebb name to headline this event and to underline the sense of devotion Nebbiolo stirs in people.”
Chris goes on to add, “We’ll have a particularly strong cross-section of Nebbiolo wines from northern Italy, the grape’s traditional home, and particularly from Piedmont, the heartland, where it makes the most famous version, Barolo. There will be at least 20 Oz producers in attendance too. Our guests can either taste through 60-odd examples for themselves or be guided in a number of seminar formats. So it’s a day for the discoverer and the devotee of this super grape.”

** A note on club nebb.
David Ridge, a well-known figure in the Italian wine scene in Adelaide and around Australia, formed club nebb in 1998, when he realised that this intriguing red variety was the only other grape (along with Pinot Noir) that caused people to argue about it, take sides and hold dinners to celebrate and discuss its marvels. Membership is informal, nominal, notional and likely to be a lifelong devotion.
