3 Tips For More Enjoyable Family Dinner Times

By Tony Polese · On March 1, 2024

If you have a young family, one of the most important things that you can do is to eat meals together. However, at the end of a stressful day, sometimes spending dinner time together can feel like the last thing that everyone has the emotional bandwidth to do. Luckily, there are things that you can do to make these times easier on everyone and get the full benefits of sharing dinner time with your family.

To help you learn how this can be done, here are three tips for more enjoyable family dinner times.

Create A Shared Space

While having a separate space to eat at a dining table may be what comes to mind when you envision a family sitting down to share a meal together, this formality doesn’t have to be the case. In fact, as long as you’re sharing space with one another and aren’t distracted by things like screens, your family can get the mental and emotional benefits of having family dinners.

If you prefer sitting at the bar in your kitchen to eat or take your meals into a different room and eat on trays, it doesn’t really matter. Just so long as you’re in a space together with your family and are sharing a meal that you can bond over, your family will benefit from this all-important ritual.

Make Dinner Time Something To Look Forward To

When you’re trying to feed a family, it can be hard to balance everyone’s dietary needs and preferences. Because of this, your family might experience things like picky eaters, changing tastes, and more. This can make dinner time stressful on parents and kids alike.

To reduce some of this stress, try to make dinner time something that everyone in the family can look forward to. This doesn’t mean that every meal has to be gourmet or even particularly healthy. You can make mealtimes fun by trying new recipes together, preparing the meal as a family, letting kids pick the menu a few days each week, changing the setting by having a picnic or eating outside, and more.

Lower Your Expectations To Reduce Stress

Every parent wants their child to be fed and healthy while exhibiting good table manners. But in an effort to achieve all of these goals, parents may feel like mealtimes are a particular battle with their kids.

To combat, try lowering your expectations of how you think a mealtime should go on paper. If your child only takes a few bites of food one night, know that their appetites can fluctuate and move on. If your kids have a hard time sitting still at the table, give them a chance to move around a bit more before or after the meal, or just let go of needing them to sit in the same seat each night. The more you’re able to make dinner time a positive thing and relax about the whole event, the more enjoyable it will be for everyone.

If you want to make dinner time more enjoyable for your family, consider using the tips mentioned above to help you learn how this can be done in your home.
