2018 OZ Asia Festival Review – While I Was Waiting

By Tony Polese · On October 31, 2018

This theatre production directed by  Omar Abusaada  occurs over a two tiered stage where Taim watches over his family and friends while laying in a coma after being brutally beaten at a security check point in Damascus, Syria.  While I was Waiting was also making its Australian premiere at the 2018 OzAsia Festival.

Watching this play gives me an idea of everyday life in Damascus in 2015, in the middle of the Syrian Civil War.

While in a coma, his mother who is overcome with grief, his girlfriend Salma, and sister Nada all visit him.  Nada having returned from Beirut.

What this play portrayed was the dilemma that faces residents on whether they stay in Damascus or flee to another country.

Videos are also shown during the play which illustrate the anti Government demonstrations.

I found it very interesting to have the upper tier set up as a DJ turntable,  and having songs performed to mix in some live music into the play.
Overall, this is a dark and powerful theatre production.  And each of the performers who are totally unique from each other play their part in a tremndous manner.  The season has now ended at OzAsia Festival but this is one theatre I would highly recommend if you have the chance to see it interstate or if a return is made here to Adelaide
