Split Second Heroes
Split Second Heroes tells a colourful story about life and perspective. Starring Gabrielle Nankivell as Black, Luke Smiles as White and Vince Crowley as Grey, the production uses contemporary dance to convey its overarching themes.
The set design is minimal with a single fixture placed in the centre. A ring of floor lights surround the white stage that is engulfed by different colours throughout the course of the performance. Benjamin Cistern, the set and lighting designer, creates a great contrast between colour and dullness through the use of lighting which sets the mood of certain moments in the story. The lighting design is one of the most interesting aspects of the production because it is unique and engages the viewer.
The narrative is communicated predominately through the movement of contemporary dance which is choreographed with the lighting design. The interplay between the performers and the stage lights is visually enjoyable and satisfying. Furthermore, with the use of simple props, the story is layered with further dimensions.
Although the way the performance is delivered may appeal to only a niche crowd, it is undeniable that the show is visually appealing and delivers a thought provoking message about our individual journeys through life.
