Movie review: The Hating Game

By Tony Polese · On January 27, 2022

In Cinemas from January 27th

(Reviewed by John Glennie)

An enjoyable comedy romance that will give a good chuckle and warm the heart – very predictable, but enjoyable!

Lucy Hutton (Lucy Hale) and Joshua Templeton (Austin Stowell) are both aspiring corporate climbers who can’t stand each other, but share an office. Josh is arrogant, suave and very organised and Lucy is friendly and tolerant of her co-workers but extremely efficient at her job.

Tensions rise when it is announced that their publishing company will be appointing a new Managing Director. The gloves are certainly off as these two intense rivals battle for supremacy in the race to gain favouratism. Lucy has her supporters but Josh certainly seems to be the front-runner. To help push her cause. Lucy changes her image from wearing fairly plain clothes to very sexy corporate attire – but comes across as very clumsy in the process.

Things take a turn when Lucy lands a kiss on Joshua after a confrontation in the elevator when she is heading out on a “date” with co-worker Danny (Damon Daunno) after work. Next day the tension between Josh and Lucy are exacerpated when his proposal for team bonding, a paintball competition, is accepted over hers by management. Lucy ends up with a chronic fever at the event and Josh seems to be the “knight in shining armour” but she still shows aloofness at work. He reminds Lucy that she owes him one after he cared for her and called a doctor, and ends up being his partner at his brother’s wedding where their differences appear to be settled.

Back at work Lucy overhears a conversation between Josh and their boss where the latter is extolling Josh’s virtues and his lesser opinion of Lucy. Lucy focusses all her attention on the promotion, which she is convinced is lost to her arrogant colleague.

No spoilers, though you can probably predict which way this is heading. Definitely go to the cinema to enjoy this comedy on the big screen – I don’t think you’ll come out disappointed!
