Movie Review: Leaving Afghanistan

By Tony Polese · On November 24, 2019

Leaving Afghanistan (2019)
Russian Film Festival – Palace Cinemas

Based on true events, occurring between 1988-1989 as the USSR attempted to withdraw from Afghanistan, a Russian pilot is captured by the mujahideen. The pilot’s father happens to be in charge of the Russian withdrawal and the water is clouded as he mis-uses military resources to try and rescue his son.

Trust no one, plenty of back-stabbing and tragedy with some heroic bravism thrown in. War is confusing and you never know who to trust. Drama was realistic and captivating throwing you in the thick of it, feeling what the soldiers would be feeling including fear, duty and survival instincts.

Plenty of plot twists and turns to keep one entertained I give this film 8 Russian vodkas out of 10.
