Dogman is a multi-award-winning crime thriller from internationally-heralded writer/director Matteo Garrone. It is the compelling story of a gentle family man driven beyond his limits and is based on a remarkable true story.
In a dilapidated Neapolitan suburb, Marcello (Marcello Fonte) runs a dog grooming business, caring for the neighbourhood pooches and raising his young daughter, Alida, for whom he’d do anything for. Marcello is domineered by one of his customers. Simone, a petty criminal and thug who throws his weight around the tight knit community at every opportunity. Marcello soon becomes swept up in a criminal plan he wants nothing to do with.
The beautifully filmed, though depressing southern Italy images, set the scene for the movie. From the very beginning you know this is not a going to be a movie with a happy ending. While the main character Marcello is kind gentle character who lovingly cares for dogs, he is also a petty criminal, which is one of the reasons he starts getting into trouble. However, overall one has to feel pity and a tinge of sadness for him as his life escalates out of control.
The movie starts well and slowly simmers along as the characters build and the violence escalates and Marcello is forced into a position, he doesn’t want to be in.
In the end it is worth seeing the movie for the wonderful dark cinematography, characters and for the dogs but the ending is unsatisfying, lacking any bite what so ever.
