Movie Review: Colossal

By Tony Polese · On May 1, 2017

Words by Karen Farrugia

Colossal stars Anne Hathaway as life screw up Gloria, whose bad decisions are creating catastrophic events across the globe.

The story begins in New York with Gloria being kicked out by her boyfriend Tim (Dan Stevens) after an all-night bender. She then moves back home and runs into her childhood friend Oscar (Jason Sudeikis). After another drinking session with him and his friends she wakes the next day to hear a giant monster has attacked Seoul.

Firstly Gloria is unaware of her ‘cause and affect’ behaviour and how it is linked to this event, until there is property damage and a body count involved. She then tries to convince her friends what is happening and looks at changing her train wreck of a life.

She uses people and intoxicants, and gets what she wants. Luckily she sees the light and realises the bad cycle will repeat if she doesn’t get a handle on things.

It’s a quirky psychological comedy about not knowing how your decisions affect others, and in this case, on a large scale. Anne does a great job at conveying this message.
