This Korean movie is engrossing – but very, very long! Run time is nearly 150 minutes and it really could have been much shorter without losing anything as I found it quite slow and, at times, a bit hard to work out where it was going.
The story involves an aspiring writer Jong-su (Yoo Ah-in) who bumps into Haemi (Jun Jong-seo) who used to live in the same neighbourhood as him. They soon become romantically involved and she asks him to look after her cat while she goes on a trip to Africa.
She asks him to pick her up on her return, but introduces Ben (Steven Yeun) whom she met in Africa. After the ride into the city from the airport it is soon evident that he is quite wealthy and Haemi prefers to accept a ride in Ben’s Porsche instead of Jongsu’s old farm truck.
Ben proves to be very mysterious and, despite being asked, we never really find out what he does or how he made his money. After Haemi and Ben turn up at Jongsu’s farm and they share a joint, Ben confesses his secret hobby.
Up until this point the movie was annoyingly slow and it is really only after this scene that the movie becomes interesting. It looks like Jongsu is being set up for something … but what? The story line is a bit cryptic but stick with it as it becomes quite rewarding to the viewer.
The movie will be showing at Palace Nova cinemas.
