Film Review – A Monster Calls
Reviewed by Geoff Jenke
A Monster Calls follows the life of 12-year-old Connor who is dealing with his mother’s illness, a less than sympathetic grandmother and bullying class mates. He however does have a friend in the form of a monster who visits him at 12:07 am at night. The monster is part of an old tree in the cemetery nearby (One could say Groot gets his own movie) and is ancient. It is not often we walks but the time has come to walk again and guide Conner on a journey of courage, faith and truth through three stories from his past.
The monster is voiced by Liam Nelson, Conner is played by Lewis MacDougall, his mother by a heartbreaking Felicity Jones and his grandmother by a chilly Sigourney Weaver. Together they create awonderful story laced with love and horror. A Monster Calls is full of great GCI, real life acting and superb animation. A blend of fantasy and real life drama.
A Monster Calls does not have a single dull moment and this makes it one of the great films of 2017. It is not a film for children under 13, even though the trailers may suggest so. While it seems achild’s movie, it delves much deeper and darker.
Go see it for yourself and don’t forget to take a box of tissues. A masterpiece.
