Bombshell Film Review

By Tony Polese · On January 20, 2020

Starring Academy Award winner Charlize Theron, Australian actress and Academy Award winner Nicole Kidman and Australian Actress and Academy Award nominee Margot Robbie.

Directed by Jay Roach

Based on the real life scandal that rocked the US media world. Bombshell tells the story of Fox News and Fox Television Station’s CEO Roger Aile’s (John Lithgow) fall from Rupert Murdoch’s powerful media empire in July 2016.

This story focus‘ on three woman who stood up in a once male dominated industry and against all odds fought and won sexual harassment suits against Ailes to change a culture that had long been accepted as the norm in the television media industry.

Megyn Kelly (Charlize Theron) former corporate defence lawyer turned Fox news anchor is reluctant in the beginning to come forward choosing to remain silent neither publicly backing nor speaking out against long-time friend and boss Roger Ailse. Also not wanting to rock the boat with her own career until she can no longer sit in silence takes a stand and encourages others to speak out before coming forward herself.

Gretchen Calson (Nicole Kidman) former co-host of morning show Fox & Friends with the Fox News Channel. Demoted and eventually losses her job for rejecting Ailse’s advancements exposes and brings the truth to light making Roger Ailse accountable for his actions.

Kayla Pospisil (Marot Robbie) a fictional character representing Ailse’s other sexual harassment victims as a whole. Prospisil an ambitious new young employee of Fox vulnerable and eager to climb up the Fox ranks unable to reject Ailse’s sleazy advances in fear of being sacked from her job.

Throw Donald Trump’s rise as republican candidate into the background with Megyn Kelly questioning him about his treatment of women and then his personal tweets and attacks against her only to back down forced by Fox helps sets the scene.

This movie drives home a very powerful message over and over with it story and no doubt will hit home to anyone who has experienced any type of harassment whether they have stood up or not.

Theron, Kidman and Robbie do such an amazing job at bringing out the realness of this scandal and the effects theses’ actions have on primary, secondary and tertiary person’s involved.

I give this movie a 9/10 well worth watching.

Bombshell is now showing at Palace Nova and Palace Prospect cinemas.
