Eventalaide had the pleasure of seeing Rocketman this week.
The director was Dexter Fletcher who completed last years Bohemian Rhapsody. Talon Egerton played the adult Elton John and Mathew iIllesly played the young Reggie Dwight (Elton’s birth name.)
The film commenced dramatically. It traced the life of Reggie Dwight, from his young years as a natural pianist to the man he is today.
His father was not emotionally attached to Reggie and did not spend time with him. His mother was self absorbed and did not give him the encouragement he deserved. His grandmother was his saviour who believed he could accomplish great things.
He met Bernie Taupin in his teenage years. Bernie would write down the songs and Elton put them together with music. Bernie was his catapult to stardom and their friendship withstood the test of time. They had a respect and admiration for each other which is still alive today.
The road to stardom was not easy, he was used, turned to drugs, alcohol and had an eating disorder. He did not have his parents support but even through his darkest moments he pushed through.
The movie was entertaining, colourful, bold, fun and dramatic. Even if you are not a fan of Elton Johns music, this movie will make you appreciate what a talented entertainer he is. He loved to perform and his stage presence was enthralling and magical.
