Angelique
Tanya Mackay & William Edmonds
On the 15th October we were lucky enough to be invited to check out Angelique, the new work from theatre company isthisyours? written in collaboration with Duncan Graham. This piece has all the trademarks of a black comedy with something a little unique thrown in, and the direction of Tess Leong ensures the show achieves its mission to challenge the audience to think and question.
The plot focus around Angelique, a 16-year-old girl whose life is appears to be crumbling around her. Angelique’s sister is missing, her parents are emotionally fragile and the appearance of a talking parrot has sent the house into a spiral of confusion, pushing Angelique to start question her reality. This show does not take the audience down the path of your typical theatre piece, and that is evidently clear as soon as the performance begins. Instead you are immersed into the plot, which seems to blur the lines between what is real and what is not, even for the audience. The company sets out with a goal to make you question how you view the world, our place and how we accept or do not accept that around us, Angelique does this, plus so much more.
We wish we could tell you the details, but in some ways that would ruin the impact Angelique has on its audience. We can tell you to be prepared to see Her Majesty’s Theatre in a way you probably haven’t before, to wear comfortable clothes and shows and to be prepared to move around. Go to Angelique with an open mind, because this show will push you to think outside of what you know and expect. The concept and plot is unique and engaging work, but it’s the cast that really pull this together, all doing a fantastic job of challenging roles and scenes. This is one to see for anyone looking for something quirky, challenging and unique, a theatre performance that no only entertains but pushes you to revaluate the world around you (and just what theatre is and can be).
