Australia’s international champion of puppetry, Spare Parts Puppet Theatre and the Adelaide Festival Centre present the Adelaide premiere of Spare Parts Puppet Theatre’s acclaimed production of The Little Prince in the Space Theatre for three performances on Friday 27 and Saturday 28 May. At 50 minutes and suitable for ages four and above, this is a show childr en and families will enjoy together. Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s The Little Prince (1943) is one of the most widely read books in history. It has sold 140 million copies worldwide and been printed in more than 250 languages and dialects, including Braille. For more than seventy years this timeless story about the importance of friendship has brought joy to adults and children alike with its beautiful insights and humour to show that those things which are essential in life are invisible to the eye. Saint-Exupéry’s exquisite tale tells the story of a curious prince who leaves his tiny home planet and journeys across the universe. On his travels he meets a crash-landed pilot, a cunning snake, a wild fox and an oddball bunch of grown-ups. In doing so he discovers that adults have very strange ideas about the things that really matter and that there are things that can only be discovered with the heart.
The Little Prince is an adventure story that celebrates the richness of human feeling and imagination. Adapted by Simon Clarke from the original book The Little Prince is directed by Michael Barlow with designs by Jiri Zmitko, composition by Lee Buddle and lighting designs by Karen Cook. Puppet construction is by Jiri Zmitko and Kipling Smith. The Little Prince is performed by Jacob Lehrer (DV8, Strange Fruit) and Jessica Lewis. Associate Director of Spare Parts and director of the production, Michael Barlow, said, “The Little Prince is an imaginative and vivid work, continually reminding us of the magic of the imagination. The work speaks strongly about what really matters in life. It isn’t expensive or flashy things that have the greatest value, it’s the people we form relationships with”. Spare Parts Puppet Theatre was founded in 1981 and is Australia’s champion of puppetry and a leader in puppetry internationally. With a vision to transform people’s view of the world and each other through world class puppetry the company presents four seasons annually at its home theatre in Fremantle, tours regionally, nationally and internationally and provides unique opportunities for the development of emergent and established puppetry artists.

The novella is both the most-read and most-translated book in the French language, and was voted the best book of the 20th century in France, becoming one of the top best-selling books ever published.
