Adelaide Fringe Review: Paint and Sip – Mystical Forest

By Tony Polese · On March 3, 2020

Paint and Sip – Mystical Forest

Studio Vino

I have a confession – I’m not a first timer to Studio Vino’s Paint and Sip. I first attended during the 2019 Fringe season, and have been another time with my mum for a session. The reason I keep coming back is because it’s such a great environment to give painting a shot, regardless of whether you’re an artist or you haven’t picked up a brush since your school days.  What’s also great is that there are SO many themes to choose from, so you don’t have a bit of guidance as to where you are heading with the session, or you can choose something a little more challenging like painting your partner Picasso style  where you truly have to work from your imagination.

Today we were painting a ‘mystical forest’ – essentially a psychedelic swirl with black trees and leaves/flower petals scattered over the top. Sounds easy, right? Well, even with instructor Jen’s simple instructions I managed to misinterpret the instructions right from the start of the swirl, which took some crafting to try to bring back to vaguely like the style of the original work, but that’s half the fun.  It’s pretty amazing to see how differently each person interprets the original image or puts their own spin on the theme.  I presume this can vary considerably depending on how much ‘sipping’ (Yes! There’s a bar!) you do alongside your painting too. While most people stuck pretty close to the theme, one participant replaced her black trees with orange and white koi carp swimming around the centre of her image. I instantly regretted my creepy black tree attempts and wished I could have attempted unicorns or something more magical.

Such an enjoyable afternoon shared with friends, and a bit of a laugh no matter your skill level.  Don’t have time amongst all your other shows this mad march? The great news is that this isn’t a Fringe only season – they’re on Pirie St all year!

10/10 (5 stars)
