The Lighthouse review

By Tony Polese · On March 2, 2020

Adelaide Festival “The Lighthouse” by Patch Theatre

Adelaide Festival 2020 has begun! With awesome shows and art displays popping up everywhere, I started off this season with Patch Theatre’s production The Lighthouse. Directed by Geoff Cobham, The Lighthouse is an interactive children’s theatre production exhibiting vivid light displays and ethereal theatrical experiences. It is all to celebrate the mysterious force of nature, light.

Taking place at the Queen’s Theatre until this Saturday March 7th, The Lighthouse is a walk-through maze-like experience in which a small group of guests are led from room to room by fascinating, otherworldly characters. Each room contains a different display of light, theatre and objects in order to explore the countless properties of light. Paired with a dreamy soundtrack and interactive experiences, these spectacular lighting displays manage to magically transport viewers into an enchanting, dreamlike world. It almost makes you forget where you are for the hour-long show!

Cobham manages to create magic by using effects such as lasers, haze effects, spotlighting and bubbles paired together with physical objects. Participants are also given tools throughout the experience, encouraging them to explore the light themselves and see the ways in which it can be manipulated.

Recommended for ages 3+, The Lighthouse possesses everything necessary to entertain all. From the very little ones to the adults taking their grandchildren out for the day. Part magical rave, part scientific learning experience, this uniquely modern interactive theatre production celebrates curiosity, adventure and interaction for all ages.

Bring your children or grand-children or go in with a small group of friends and experience this cleverly crafted show. I guarantee it will illuminate your mind and leave you spellbound by the beauty of light. Not to mention, the awesome displays make for great pictures!
