SANFL Round 6 review

SANFL Round 6
West Adelaide vs Norwood
Saturday August 1st, HISENSE Stadium

Match Review by Sarah List

In an even season where most teams are lurching from wins to losses and back again, this round six encounter between Norwood and West Adelaide could not have been more important.

In front of a good crowd, the opening quarter was very evenly matched with a high standard of game play. Early goals were scored one to one until suddenly Panos had bagged his third for the Legs at the 16th minute and there was sliver of breathing space. A quick response by May for Westies at the 18th minute pulled the lead back to seven points, but a pair of goals before the quarter time siren had Norwood up by 20 at the first break.

In the Second quarter it felt like West Adelaide had the edge over Norwood, moving the ball effectively and peppering the goals. Unfortunately their efforts were not rewarded by accurate kicking and a goal by Johnston edged the Legs further in front at the seven minute mark. Westies persisted to score two majors towards the end of the second quarter, but Norwood were simply ruthlessly efficient in moving the ball forward and working accurately in front of goal. A pair by Pinyon and Wilson edged the lead to 24 points at the major break.

The third quarter was all red and blue at full throttle, piling on seven goals to a meagre three behinds for the bloods. A highlight of the quarter was a 60 metre goal by Douglas out of the centre after a tap down at the bounce.  The confidence of the Norwood side was palpable and they were just shy of ten goals clear at the final change.

In the fourth the lead threatened to blow out further, but Westies were saved somewhat by a drop in intensity and accuracy in front of goals by the Legs. The fourth proved to be a much more even encounter with three goals a piece, but the legs were exceptionally convincing in this win. It will be interesting to see how they fare against Surprise packer South Adelaide, the only team thus far to best the top of the table Eagles.
