Boys Taste Better With Nutella

By Tony Polese · On November 24, 2019

BOYS TASTE BETTER WITH NUTELLA AT ADELAIDE FRINGE 2020

AWARD-WINNING COMEDY USES HAZELNUT SPREAD TO EXPLORE THE BEST (& WORST) MOMENTS OF RELATIONSHIPS.

After being awarded FRINGE WORLD Festival 2019 Weekly Award for BEST THEATRE and nominated for PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD at Melbourne Fringe 2019, the hilarious, intimate and slightly sticky Boys Taste Better with Nutella will be performing at Adelaide Fringe 2020.

Part theatre, part comedy, Boys Taste Better with Nutella  uses comedic storytelling, kitsch dance moves, Kpop music and hazelnut spread to explore relationships and self-worth. A hilarious and heartfelt two-person performance, Boys Taste Better with Nutella  features a lot of Nutella and a rain of fries. As one reviewer noted “Hill and Wood broke into simultaneous dance at one point sending what felt like hundreds of fries flying through the air, littering the stage and the audience. The man sitting next to me had a fry hurdle through the air and plop straight into his wine, which was quite delightful”  (Stevie Zipper).

The story focuses on Aggy and Frederick. Two best friends who may be self-loathing, socially anxious and addicted to food but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. With Aggy once again falling for the wrong guy and Frederick’s most fulfilling connection being with his internet provider, they realise there is nothing but time to explore the best (and worst) moments of their relationships.

Produced by Kristen Maloney, performed by Caitlin Hill and Peter Wood and co-directed by Ms Maloney, Ms Hill and Mr Wood. Caitlin Hill is a theatre, television and film actor, and one of Australia’s first YouTubers. Her work focuses on themes of equality and empowering women, inspired by spending too much time on Tumblr.

Peter Wood is an Australasian actor, dancer and performance-maker, and creates work that focuses on LGBTQ+ issues with Asian-Australian influences. Kristen Maloney is a director, playwright, producer, academic and also Artistic Director of Backyard Theatre Collective, the Brisbane-based company that is touring the show to Perth, Melbourne and Adelaide. “Backyard Theatre Collective is a company focused on providing opportunities for talented individuals to team up and make great art. We feel this is possible when the collective is diverse and everyone feels that they belong. This balance and belonging needs to include directors, writers, performers, producers, marketing and technical production. For Boys Taste Better with Nutella our team includes female, queer, Asian, emerging and mid-career artists” says Ms Maloney.

⭐⭐⭐⭐ “Boys Taste Better with Nutella was an absolute riot… one of the most original and clever and
FUNNY Fringe World shows that I have seen in years.” WeekendNotes, 2019. ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Isolated Nation, 2019.
 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ The Fourth Wall, 2019.
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Agent Mystery Case, 2019.

Boys Taste Better with Nutella is supported by Creative Partnerships Australia through MATCH Lab.
