Movie Review: Downton Abbey

By Tony Polese · On September 15, 2019

Eventalaide were privileged to see the premiere of the Downton Abbey movie and we were not disappointed. The movie includes all your favourite characters from the classic television series.

The movie revolves around a sudden announcement that the King and Queen will be visiting Downton Abbey for one night. The staff are beside themselves with the honour and it is all systems go as preparations get underway – manicured gardens and lawns, not a speck of dust on the premises, menu preparation, etc.

However, noses are soon put totally out of joint when the Royal minders arrive and advise that all their staff will take over all functions – cooking, cleaning, room service and maintenance, and even the food service. In typical Downton Abbey style, plots develop which could allow the resident staff to do their job and show the Royals what they are capable of.

The movie is packed with hilarious pomp and ceremony, subtle but sarcastic digs, potential romances, jealousy, and intrigue in a way that only the bigoted English high-and-mighty are capable of. Maggie Smith is her usual classic (though very type-cast) self and we are always wondering what little plots she is scheming behind everyone’s back. Carson is asked to come back as head butler for the event which, naturally, put other noses out of joint.

A great movie along the same vane as the TV series and equally as enjoyable. Go and see it to be both “wowed” by English ceremony and to have a good laugh.
