Music Review: Maggie Rogers & Stella Donnelly

By Tony Polese · On May 27, 2019

The 25th May was a big night for music in Adelaide at Thebarton Theatre. Rising to fame only 3 years ago, and discovered by Pharrell Williams, Maggie Rogers braced the stage for an absolutely incredible performance! But first up to support was the absolutely phenomenal Stella Donnelly, who gave a stellar performance singing songs from her new album, ‘Beware of the Dogs’. She is one of the most raw and down-to-earth musicians in this whole country, and her lyrics are so real and relatable today that you feel like she’s singing to you directly. She interacts with the audience to provide a truly intimate gig, and you can feel her songs coming directly from her innermost soul as she sings from the heart with every emotion, pain and melancholy to brief humour and choruses that get stuck in your head but never tire of.I will definitely be making sure to see Stella Donnelly again when she comes to Adelaide for her own show.Go check out her new album too if you haven’t already done so.

The energetic bundle-of-fun, that is Maggie Rogers was up next, and wow…. She absolutely impressed me! She didn’t just sing… she performed… and that is something that sets her apart from similar artists of her genre. Like a breath of fresh air, she was jumping and dancing around on stage, getting the audience all buzzed up and happy. She can definitely put a smile on your face, and her voice is absolutely distinctly perfect live! With every note giving you goosebumps as she filled up Thebarton Theatre.Coming from America, I think she was so impressed with the Audience of Adelaide, that the crowd would not stop cheering for almost 2 minutes after one of her songs that she actually stepped back, with hands on her mouth in surprise and blushing out of feeling overwhelmed for the local Adelaide crowd loving her so much. I don’t think she expected that at all.And for her final song of her encore, she asked the audience to stay completely silent, and you could almost hear a pin drop, then she started singing without a microphone and her powerful voice filled up Thebarton Theatre leaving everyone speechless as she seemed to look like an angel with the spotlight on her. It was an incredible experience, and I don’t doubt a single person left that night without a feeling of inspiration and wonder inside themselves.Seeing Stella and Maggie together was one of the best gigs I’ve ever been to.
