Adelaide Fringe: Josh Glanc

By Tony Polese · On March 10, 2019

Josh Glanc – Glance You For Having Me
The Garden of Unearthly Delights
Genre: Comedy

(Review by Sarah List)

Josh Glanc (pronounced glance) has become somewhat of a fixture on the Adelaide Fringe comedy circuit in recent years, and while some comics tour the same show for consecutive seasons, Glanc bravely develops new material for each visit. Abandoning a legal career to don a bald cap in an Aqua parody seems a risky decision to make, but he’s developed a solid following amongst people who appreciate his signature style – quirky awkward.

2019 sees Glanc pitching somewhere between the fashion of John Travolta and the vocal stylings of Dean Martin.  Opening the act with a serenade that sees just about every female audience member receive a point and a wink, it’s clear from the outset that a few people are going to be leaving with a lesser quantity of dignity intact. Not even the on stage pot plant is seemingly safe.

The central comedic theme this year is Josh and the myriad of ways that he’s tortured his mum by making up stories.  Glanc apparently means ‘razzle dazzle’ ie showmanship, so his love of performing (that is making up stories) is a family tradition. He insists that when she realises that he’s joking, they laugh and it brings them closer together. It also at one point separates his body from his appendix in an apparent case of the boy that cried wolf.

His show relies on improve and audience participation and while some of the stories are less well developed than others, Glanc is a warm personality that will literally sweat all the way through his three piece polyester suit to get a laugh.
