Mary’s Poppin Opening

By Eventalaide · On March 21, 2016

Mary’s Poppin
Synagogue Place, Adelaide
Official Opening April 8th, 2016

Dust off your sequins and polish those stilettos: Adelaide’s bar scene is about to get shaken and stirred with the arrival of new east end cocktail lounge MARY’S POPPIN, opening April 8.

Tucked away in a secret lane on Synagogue Place behind the fine restaurants and chic boutiques of Rundle Street, MARY’S POPPIN is Adelaide’s most unique hotspot, a hopping cocktail cantina where you can swing from the chandelier to Sia, or slide down a pole with a glass of Veuve.

It’s a raucous honky-tonk saloon where the stage (and microphones) are always open to those who have talent to burn.

And it’s the first permanent cabaret bar in Adelaide’s east end, serving delectable cocktails alongside nightly random popup shows from some of the world’s best singers, wildest drag divas and sauciest burlesque performers.

Located on the top floor of one of the city’s oldest buildings, MARY’S has been totally re-imagined as a stylish and intimate space by internationally renowned designer Michael Delany in his first ever Adelaide project.

The visionary genius behind Melbourne hangouts Honkytonks, Sorry Grandma and The Bottom End, recently opened 77 and Santa Barbara, the revamp of former King’s Cross hotspot Piano Bar, Delany is famed for his whimsical and ironic designs that draw inspiration from pop culture.

Harking back to the late-night New York speakeasies of the 1920s and 30s, MARY’S POPPIN mixes luxe touches like opulent furnishings and a giant crystal chandelier with playful features such as specially-designed dancing poles, a “mini disco” in every bathroom cubicle, and a custom-made baby grand piano that doubles as a DJ booth.

Think Clockwork Orange meets vaudeville brat-pack, drenched in a dirty martini – and you’re half way there.

There’s even a designated “Selfie Spot” with expertly calibrated light boxes so you can capture that perfect selfie on your smartphone in between drinks.

Speaking of drinks: you’ll want to try all of MARY’S’ signature Long Island Iced Teas on their remixed classic cocktails menu. (Just maybe not all in one night…!)

And with a stream of amazing performers coming through every week, you never know who’s going to show up on stage for a spin on the microphone – maybe it’ll be you?

“Mary’s Poppin is a totally new concept for Adelaide,” owner Stephen Craddock says.

“It’s the ultimate in opulence, but it’s also campy and casual, it’s for everybody. It’s a place to dance, to sing-along to familiar tunes – we have officially banned ‘doof doof’ and crazy club bangers.

“We want everyone who comes to Mary’s to have sung at least once before they’ve left.”

MARY’S POPPIN officially launches on April 8, opening every Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 8pm til late.

Just look for the pink neon umbrella on Synagogue Place, and follow the glitter trail to Adelaide’s newest, campiest, sleekest speakeasy.
